Editorial Policy
NightOwl SleepCalc publishes educational sleep-planning calculators and guides. Our goal is to make sleep timing easier to understand with practical examples, clear assumptions, and source-backed explanations.
Our editorial principles
NightOwl content should be:
- Useful for real-life sleep planning.
- Written in clear, plain language.
- Transparent about assumptions and limitations.
- Careful with health-adjacent claims.
- Supported by reputable sources when discussing sleep, caffeine, jet lag, fatigue, or safety.
- Updated when information changes or errors are found.
Sources we use
Depending on the topic, we may reference:
- CDC sleep and public health guidance.
- NIH/NHLBI sleep education resources.
- FDA consumer guidance on caffeine.
- CDC Yellow Book travel health guidance.
- CDC/NIOSH fatigue, shift-work, and workplace safety resources.
- Peer-reviewed studies available through PubMed or academic journals.
We avoid making strong health claims without support from reputable sources.
Calculator methodology
NightOwl calculators use adjustable assumptions such as sleep duration, sleep latency, estimated sleep-cycle length, and flexible wake windows. Results are estimates meant for planning, not medical guidance.
For example:
- A bedtime calculation may use: Bedtime = wake-up time − target sleep duration − estimated sleep latency.
- A sleep-cycle calculation may use an estimated cycle length, such as 90 minutes, while explaining that real sleep cycles can vary.
Review and updates
Before publication, pages are reviewed for clarity, source accuracy, internal consistency, overly strong or unsupported wording, broken links, and calculator relevance.
Pages may be updated when new sources are added, calculator logic changes, examples are improved, or corrections are requested. When we make a meaningful update, we update the page's "Last reviewed" date.
Corrections
We welcome correction requests. To report an issue, use the contact form. Please include the page URL, the relevant sentence or section, and a short explanation of the issue.
Medical disclaimer
NightOwl SleepCalc is not a medical provider. Our content and calculators are for education and planning only. We do not diagnose, treat, or prevent medical conditions.
